- Maxillary Impression Requires 3 Scoops of Powder and last line on water beaker the 3rd one right at level! Every drop of water counts and could make it to runny. I always add powder first then water but you can do it either way I like to have more control of water being added but others like to alginate to get soak up first to prevent powder in air. I say it is always better to add a little at a time then mix fast!
- Mandibular requires 2 Scoops like Raisin Brand Cereal and water filled to 2nd line on water beaker.
- Quadrant impressions require one scoop and one line on water beaker
- NOTE YOU MIGHT HAVE TO ADD AN EXTRA SCOOP IF THE ARCH IS LARGER THAN NORMAL AND/OR PALLET IS TALL.
- NOTE IF KEEP GETTING VOIDS IN ANTERIOR REGION ADD SOME WITH YOUR FINGER FROM BOWL TO TEETH BEFORE INSERTING THE IMPRESSION TRAY. HELPS WHEN THERE IS CROWDING.
- NOTE DON'T PLACE FRONT OF TRAY RIGHT UP AGAINST ANTERIOR TEETH STAY CLEAR FROM FRONT TEETH A FEW MM SO THE IMPRESSION MATERIAL HAS ROOM TO OOZE OUT AND MAKE A LIP ROLL.
- Mix in a figure 8 motion and moving fast so it does not set up. Check the container to make sure it is not fast set if you are new at the office.
Smooth Alginate up along side of bowl to smooth alginate so there are no lumps. Your alginate should be smooth and creamy not runny or stiff.
Always try your impression trays you picked out for your patient's making sure you can cover the posterior tooth. Tray should not rub along gums or teeth. Place it in the mouth aiming for one corner at a time so you don't stretch your patient out and cause crack lips in the corners the next day. Take your time, most patient's don't care for impressions and having others in their personnel space to begin with let alone you having to retake it because of one tiny void that will become a big problems down the road with making the appliance.
If patient has a gag reflex: Tell them to say Ha...Ha...Ha... with you nice and slow this does two things.
1. Heats up impression material from stomach heat and therefor sets it up faster!
2. Clears the back of the throat, prevents choking but make sure when doing the Max. arch that you have them lean their heads forward so everything can drain and if they get sick you can grab back of headrest cover if short one and have them loose it in the bag. Don't ever let the patient remove it from their mouth without it being set, it will be must worst instead deal with the sickness and nice and calmly tell them it is ok and they are not the first or the last that this happens to because they are embarrassed in the first place they are having a hard time with it and you don't want to have to take it again and they do need it for whatever the treatment plan that calls for the impressions in the first place. This is if the office does not have the latest Scan technique for impressions.
Another tip is to have them raise their right or left leg if able body and that will distract them from the impression most of the time.
&
The warmer the water the faster the set will also help your patient less time in mouth.
Do what you can to help clean up after the impressions are taken and make sure no alginate goes down the drain it is not good for the sink and will clog it. Don't want to have to explain that to your boss why the office needs a plumber! Boss will recall come raise time!
RINSE YOUR IMPRESSION -FROM SALIVA UNSEEN AND BLOOD OR EVEN FOOD OFF!
DISINFECT YOUR IMPRESSION NO IF'S AN'S OR BUT'S PLEASE
Wrap your impression so it does not dry out
WRITE PATIENT NAME NEXT TO IT OR BETTER YET PLACE IN LAB PAN
EVEN WHEN IN A HURRY THIS WILL AVOID MIX-UPS! ANOTHER THING BOSS WILL THINK ABOUT DURING RAISE TIME!
NOT OUT OF THE WOODS YET
MUST POUR IT UP PROPERLY
IF POUR UP HAS VOIDS AND NOT FIXABLE

I CHOSE THIS ALGINATE FOR TWO REASONS AND ONE IS COLOR CHANGING SO YOU CAN LEARN HOW FAST TO MOVE AFTER THE FIRST MIX LOL AND YOU WON'T WASTE AS MUCH AT HOME BUT DO NOT PUT DOWN SINKS EVER AND NEVER LEAVE DRY CRUST FROM LAST MIX IN BOWL , IT WILL RUIN YOUR NEXT ONE AND IT IS JUST SLOPPY. THE OTHER REASON IS IT IS FAST SET LEARN TO USE IT FOR THE COMFORT OF YOUR PATIENT!
MOST PLASTIC TRAYS ARE NOT AUTOCLAVABLE BUT THESE ONES ARE AND YOU CAN PRACTICE AND TAKE TO YOUR NEW JOB. SHOW OFF YOU HAVE THEM, IT IS A COMPETITIVE WORLD OUT THERE. I CHOSE THESE FOR THIS REASON PLUS COLORS! INDICATE SIZES
