CHARTING METHODS
Universal Charting is in General Dentistry and Palmer Charting is used in Orthodontics. FDI stands for World Dental Federation Notation hardly used.
Hey Assistant's out there today we are going over Charting one of the least favorite subjects with Dental Assistant student's because, it can become confusing.
First We are born with a total of 52 Teeth none erupted just yet, but in the tissue. Now there are some who are born with 53 which is a disorder of growth or development in the anatomical structures that results in anything different from normal is called anomaly. An attempt of the division of a developing tooth bud resulting in an incomplete formation of two teeth is called as Germination.

Some patient's like myself had just one germination but instead of both erupting like below mine stayed in the jaw and had I had to remove the one that did erupt and let the twin one erupt after extraction. I would have rather kept the one erupted prior to surgery because the twin one is more sensitive due to the enamel and it has more grooves in it.
This is an example of Germination

Notice the missing tooth is black BELOW , that is a computer charting symbol. Practice on blank charts each symbol like back in the day we wrote Multiplication over and over same goes with charting. You can not just read you have to pick up the red and blue pencil and try it until you get it. Label each tooth. Label each symbol on a fresh chart and then quiz yourself with pretend patient conditions or look at family members teeth and try to chart existing(blue) restorations. You will be allowed to chart existing but only doctors can diagnose caries (red). You will go over treatment plans with patient's MUST KNOW!
CHARTING SYMBOL
ANTERIOR REGION
Incisal Edge Worn Down
Tongue-piercing
CAN DAMAGE YOUR TEETH INCISAL EDGE AREA, NOW YOU CAN EDUCATE YOUR PATIENT ON WHY THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE IT. PLUS IT DOES GET BUILD UP ON IT JUST LIKE TEETH IF NOT CLEANED. IMAGE KISSING SOMEONE WITH THIS NOW!
OCCLUSAL SURFACE
The teeth surface that is chewing is the very top of the tooth which is called the Occlusal (O)
SEE HOW DEEP THE GROOVES ARE YOU HAVE TO BRUSH IT GOOD OR LITTLE GRAINS WILL GET STUCK AND DECAY STARTS, ESPECIALLY AFTER SKITTLES OR TOOTSIE ROLLS, THAT IS WHY SEALANTS ARE GREAT FROM PREVENTING CAVITIES AND IT IS CHEAPER THAN A FILLING, BUT AFTER THEY ARE DONE NO STICKY CANDY OR IT WILL PULL THEM OFF.
THE EMBRASURE IS THE PINK TRIANGLE AS ABOVE
Reminder see how close it is between the teeth the Interproximal surfaces, that is why it is important to floss or waterpik and floss should be c-shaped will leave link for teeth cleaning incase you know someone who just can not afford to go to a dentist at this time, the bacteria and other health risk can become an issue besides it affecting the teeth.
BUCCAL WHICH IS LOCATED ON ANY OF THE TEETH BY THE CHEEK SIDE OF THE POSTERIOR TEETH ARE THE TEETH AFTER THE SIX FRONT TEETH 1-5,12-16,17-21,28-32 ALL HAVE BUCCAL'S.
IF YOU KNOW THE SURFACES FIRST THEN WHEN ASK TO MARK A PART OF THE TOOTH YOU KNOW WHERE IT IS ON THE CHART. CHARTS CAN ALL LOOK DIFFERENT BUT THE SURFACE OF THE TOOTH IS STILL THE SAME AND SO IS THE SYMBOLS.

MESIAL & DISTAL
MIDLINE
DON'T OVER THINK IT, THE MESIAL IS ANY INTERPROXIMAL SURFACE FACING THE MIDLINE AND DISTAL ANY INTERPROXIMAL SURFACE NOT FACING THE MIDLINE
Did you know most cavities start on the M or D surface of the tooth but by the time you see it is on the O surface. That is why it is important to floss and x-rays that show the cavity starting in between the teeth is a Bitewing x-ray shows.
