My Breakdown of This Creed with Real Life Dental Experience and My Reflection To Share To Help Future DA's to Succeed
I started out in the Early 1990's and I was taught to stand by this creed and believe me I have! but, It goes a little more like this.
The first part states to be Loyal to my Employer, Calling and Myself...I agree 100% You were called to do this- If your steps in your life turn you to Dental, Then it is your calling, As for yourself , Yes always take care of You before anything else and if your getting tired take a break, If you have sore feet invest in shoes and whatever you do always adjust that chair to your height!
To develop initiative, Oh this is an important one because you need to be on top of your game and take the initiative to bring your next patient back and at times collect payment or help the front office out! Truth be told some will dislike the go getter in you as I have faced in my career. Next is having the courage to assume responsibility when at fault or to start taking care of task at the office and imagination to create ideas and develop them is so important for your growth and office growth.
Visualize your future and grab it! take advantage of and fulfill your opportunities some Doctors and even Co-workers will give to you.
To be a Co-worker being cooperative even at times you wish you didn't have to be. The friendliness rather than one of fault finding and Criticism is a good one because you will run into this a time or two, So starting out know not to and if you feel trapped into the gossip of a family work environment pull back from it and let it fade. We all have enough struggles don't add to others a burden they may not need and Karma will always come back 10 fold including others losing trust in you if they see you in the gossip mix.
To be enthusiastic about what you do what you are excited about will give you the joy of doing it and thinking clearly and with that it spreads throughout the office and at times renew an older Dentist who has lost his thrive and help bring it back even if at times they might forget it was you, There is a score card being kept on what you did with a higher power.
To be generous, not alone of my name but of my praise and time, With this share your knowledge as I am one day to a newbie we all start somewhere and to often the Season assistants don't want to but when you do come across one as I am be sure to show gratitude to their insight for no one else will tell you.
To be tolerant with my associates, for at times I too make mistakes, Tolerance is important because if you can't do that for others in return they won't do it for you and at times it is just unspoken but a mutual understanding and this can go as far up to your Dentist the Employer who signs your check so step back at times and just listen and if need to speak up they have felt that mutual respect and will have a listening ear. Never point fingers like the old saying when you point you have 3 more pointing at you.
To be friendly, realizing that friendship bestows and receives happiness., Getting up and going into work everyday can be difficult at times especially with outside work life issues, that we have to keep to ourselves at the office, but in my years I have had many lunches with dear friends who I would never had sat with if we didn't meet at the job, You learn you can befriend different cultures, ages, and beliefs and in return your work day is brighter, but truth be told with any relationship their can be the times friendship goes wrong and sometimes because of the job so know this in advance and be happy always if your friend gets the promotion and you don't because no one forsees the future and how you respond to this news cool make or break a future decision in your employers eyes. So always be that friend that you would want. Most importantly never let your heart get harden by some to reach out to others in this career. Some can burn you and some can heal you.
To be respectful of the other person’s viewpoint and condition, We all have opinions and some of us are closed off to new ideas but instead embrace changes for within the change you find growth. The second part and condition remember as one assistant limps her way to sterilization and you want to whisper oh she is slow, She served her years of many difficult cases and your body will age like hers one day unless you know to remember this Creed and the first one was to be loyal to yourself and take care of you.
To be systematic, believing that system makes for efficiency., Just like cooking in the Kitchen clean up as you go same at the office, when everything has a place it is much easier to clean and as you gain that OCD feeling at work it will incorporate into your homelife but with that being said a friendly reminder your family isn't in Dental so they may not understand these tendencies. Late work night and you see a pile of STUFF in the middle of a room, Just smile and know you are blessed to have that STUFF because of this career.
To know the value of time for both my employer and myself., As your Employers time is important to stay on schedule and at times it will be your job to make sure he or she runs on time same goes with your time, Prepare for stay in lunches and don't skip family time for in the end your family is there for you and a job is a job no matter how much you love it, Don't miss out on Kid shows because you have to be the one to stay late all the time but instead intrust in others to do your Chairside from time to time, or take upon yourself to find a temp to help you out to cover a day. There are those times you must stay late and your boss doesn't want to either deep down but remember the patient and the reason for your calling and let it jump into action!
The last two are my favorite "To be courteous—for this is the badge of good breeding., First part the breeding cracks me up but it is very old school saying and to understand it, The meaning is If someone says that a person has breeding, they mean that they think the person is from a good social background and has good manners. In other words, To be courteous to everyone will reflect your a good soul.
To walk on the sunny side of the street, seeing the beautiful things in life rather than fearing the shadows., Seeing that your cup is half full instead of half empty, When your struggling think of what you are doing right and what is going right for you to refuel yourself to keep going and will think clearer to maybe even find a solution to a difficult problem or task, Remember on a Rainy day it is benefiting the soil and plants and on your Rainy days maybe it's time for you to renew and refresh yourself with rest.
To keep smiling always., Of course your a Dental Assistant and remember when you smile even in your mask that your eyes reflect that smile under the mask but same goes for when your frowning if your feelings get hurt at work or your hard on yourself, Your eyes will be watch and sometimes because of the reflection of the tx light will reflect the patient mouth so don't always think they are looking dead at you LOL.
